In Dahomey

In Dahomey, which opened in 1903, was the first, full-length musical on Broadway written and performed by African Americans. While the music survived and is performed in this revival, the book was lost to history. Shauneille Perry has written a new one, inspired by the original characters. The story revolves around Shylock Homestead and Rareback Pinkerton, private detectives in Gatorsville, FL (performed by Bert Williams and George Walker in the original). In Perry’s new book, they are members of an amateur entertainment group who dream of taking their show to Broadway.

Presented as part of the 1998-99 Season

Play opened June 23, 1999 at the Harry De Jur Playhouse
